Luminocybe Spectralius, named for its spectral light-emitting head, is a rare bioluminescent fungus in tropical rainforest canopies. Fruiting bodies measure 5-25 cm tall with convex to broadly funnel-shaped, translucent caps showing radial striations refracting bluish light (420-490 nm). Underneath, dense gills emit a warm yellow-orange glow from active luciferin-luciferase reactions near spore tissues. Its smooth, semi-translucent stipe with fibrous patterns supports caps on decomposing wood. Belonging to Omphalotaceae, genus Luminocybe, order Agaricales, it grows in cool (10-20°C) canopy microhabitats, decomposing lignin and cellulose to aid nutrient cycling. Bioluminescence likely aids spore dispersal by attracting insects or deterring predators, linking it to rainforest biodiversity.
