Luminiflora splendens, from Latin 'lumini' (light) and 'flora' (flower), is a bioluminescent flowering plant in the Aqua Luminaceae family. It features double-layered petals: outer deep crimson red with ruffled margins, inner translucent white with faint crimson streaks and speckles, finely veined to enhance luminescence. The slender, sturdy stem supports flowers 10-25 cm tall. Native to tropical rainforest canopy environments (15-30°C), it emits a soft aqua glow at 470-530 nm from glandular cells in inner petals via a luciferin-luciferase pathway. This light attracts nocturnal pollinators like moths and bats, aiding pollination in dim canopies. An endangered species among 10 in its genus, L. splendens plays a key ecological role by providing visual cues for nocturnal pollination.
