Not ambiance. A new artistic medium, where scent becomes a carrier of memory, emotion, and imagination.

To bring DATALAND's digital rainforest to life, we created a world that is no longer only seen, but breathed. In collaboration with L'Oréal's Art & Science of Fragrance, every stage of the creative process, from the first olfactory concept to the final co-design, was developed in service of a fully immersive work of art.
Drawing on the expertise of L'Oréal's Fragrance Métier experts, the journey began with the living world itself. Inspired by the scents, atmospheres, and ecological rhythms of the rainforest, twelve original Living Scents were created to accompany the evolving environments of Machine Dreams: Rainforest.
From the damp earth of the forest floor to the rare moonflower that blooms for a single night beneath the Amazonian canopy, each scent extends the artwork beyond the visual, inviting visitors to experience nature through one of our most intimate senses.
Each scent is a reconstruction — earth, water, fire, fauna, spirit — born from headspace captures, natural ingredients and next-generation molecules. Select any scent to open its full composition.
Four core technologies capture scent with high-fidelity and engineer molecules that don't exist in nature — making the invisible permanent, without ever harming the living source.
Like an olfactory photography — a non-destructive capture method that vacuums the air around a living object (flower, wood, soil, waterfall) and traps its odorant molecules. Analysed via GC-MS to reconstruct an exact olfactory "identity card" without picking or touching the source.
A L'Oréal-exclusive eco-extraction using only air — no heat, water or solvent. It captures the most volatile facets usually lost in processing, while the plant itself can be reused after a cycle. Born of Green Sciences.
Engineered in cutting-edge labs to deliver effects that don't exist in nature or provide "superpowers" to scents: exceptional remanence, extreme diffusion, metallic / neon / velvety textures. Some are "Captive Molecules," exclusive and inimitable signatures.
Natural oils like patchouli are deconstructed by molecular distillation, removing heavy or dirty facets to keep only the heart — the most luminous part. A "couture" natural ingredient.
