Luminosa Nocturna, a rare bioluminescent butterfly from tropical rainforest canopies, has a wingspan of 0-10 cm with translucent wings showing an opalescent sheen and intricate vein patterns. Forewings bear dark tiger-like stripes, while hindwings feature bioluminescent eye spots and glowing nodes emitting light at 450-495 nm (blue-green spectrum). Its slender, lightweight body (0-2 g) and elongated appendages enable rhythmic gliding flight. Preferring 15-25°C, it inhabits upper canopy layers, likely using bioluminescence for communication or predator deterrence. Part of the Aurorae Lepidoptera cluster with only ten species, L. Nocturna exemplifies evolutionary adaptation to low-light forest environments and is a focal point for lepidopterological research.
