About DATALAND: The Future of Art is Here

Dataland is not just a museum. We are the world’s first institution dedicated to the AI Arts — a new cultural paradigm where data is the pigment, machine intelligence is the collaborator, and human imagination is the guide. Conceived by artist Refik Anadol Studio and opening in 2026 within the iconic Frank Gehry-designed The Grand LA, Dataland is a new landmark in the cultural heart of Los Angeles.

We are building a global ecosystem for data-driven art, ethical AI research, and immersive experiences that have never been realized at this scale or quality. Our mission is to explore what it means to be human in the age of AI, transforming vast, unseen datasets into poetic, sensory realities. We are a team of artists, engineers, storytellers, and strategists building the cultural institution of the 22nd century. This is your opportunity to build it with us.

The Opportunity: Architect the sensory backbone of the world’s first Museum of AI Arts.

As our Head of A/V, you will lead and manage the complex digital and physical infrastructure that brings Dataland’s groundbreaking experiences to life. You are not just maintaining systems — you are building the heartbeat of a museum where data itself becomes art.

What You Will Achieve

Pioneer: Lead the design, integration, and maintenance of cutting-edge audiovisual systems that power Dataland’s immersive environments, ensuring seamless operation across sound, video, and control systems.

Create: Engineer and optimize high-availability A/V architectures capable of delivering 4K UHD video, L-ISA spatial audio, and large-scale LED systems with precision and reliability.

Collaborate: Work alongside artists, creative technologists, data scientists, and curators to translate conceptual installations into technically robust, sensory experiences.

Innovate: Develop and prototype new A/V workflows that merge art, live performance, and machine learning technologies. Integrate emerging media networks and intelligent control systems to expand what’s possible in immersive art.

Shape: Establish best practices, standard operating procedures, and maintenance programs for Dataland’s A/V ecosystem. Build and lead a small, high-performance team to support ongoing operations and future expansions.

The Ideal Candidate Profile:

You are an A/V visionary with a builder’s mindset — equally comfortable on a ladder swapping components as you are designing a future-proof media network. You thrive in environments where art meets technology and love solving complex, multi-disciplinary challenges.

Core Qualifications

  1. 5+ years of experience in A/V integration, technical operations, or design representation, with emphasis on custom, high-performance environments.
  2. Expertise in A/V control systems (QSYS preferred; Crestron, Extron, and AMX a plus).
  3. Proficiency in custom control programming and API integrations (Python, JSON, Node-RED).
  4. Strong working knowledge of QSC QSYS, L-Acoustics L-ISA, Novastar H-Series video processors, and Absen LED systems.
  5. Experience with projectors, lenses, and auto-calibration/warping systems (e.g., Scalable Display Technologies).
  6. Hands-on experience maintaining and repairing A/V hardware: re-terminating cables, swapping drivers, replacing LED tiles, managing spares, and executing basic electronic repairs.
  7. Familiarity with live event workflows, including audio mixing, video production switching, DMX lighting, and rigging safety practices.
  8. Advanced troubleshooting across A/V and IT layers: log file interpretation, signal flow analysis, EDID/HDCP issues, network latency, and performance monitoring.
  9. Experience with media fabric networks (SDVoE, AES67, AVB, QLAN, NTP/PTP) and orchestration tools like Dante Controller and NDI Tools.
  10. Working knowledge of IT networks (Juniper or Netgear hardware, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, multicast).
  11. Ability to lift 40 pounds, climb ladders, and work in elevated or confined spaces.

Bonus Points:

  1. Experience in immersive art, theater, or large-scale experiential environments.
  2. Comfort working with experimental and emerging technologies.
  3. Deep appreciation for the intersection of art, data, and design.
  4. Experience launching new venues or complex media installations.
